Heading South Table Topper {tutorial}

Welcome to those who are new to Material Girl Quilts and thanks for stopping by!  Today I'm going to share instructions for making this cute Heading South table topper shown in Issue 13 of Love Patchwork & Quilting. 058_.tif

If you purchased the magazine and read the instructions for making the Heading South quilt, you will see that you end up with 5 extra geese blocks (one of each color).  I hate to waste any fabric, especially fabric that is already sewn into blocks...so I created this table topper.

Requirements:

  • Five flying geese blocks (measuring 4 ½” x 8 ½” each)
  • ¼ yard background fabric
  • ½ yard backing fabric
  • Two 2 ½” by WOF binding strips

Cut your background fabric as follows:

  • Five 2 ½” x 4 ½” rectangles
  • Five 5” x 4 ½” rectangles
  • Two 2 ½” x 15 ½” rectangles

Sew one 2 ½” x 4 ½” and one 5” x 4 ½” rectangle to each of the geese: 

  • Create three unit A sections with the small rectangle on the left end and the large rectangle on the right.
  • Create two unit B sections with the large rectangle onto the left end and the small rectangle on the right.

Lay out your table topper as shown with the 2 ½” x 15 ½” strips on each end and alternating units A and B to create 7 "rows".

Sew the rows together to create your table topper measuring 15 ½” x 24 ½”.

Layer your top, batting and backing and quilt as desired.
